Basics
To record
Tap "🔴 Record" to start recording into "Everything else" folder.
To make new recording in a specific folder:
- Tap
next to the folder name to open it
- Tap the "🔴" record button in the toolbar and begin speaking
While recording:
- Tap the sound level indicator
at the center of the screen to pause the recording
- Tap "â– stop" to end the recording
After recording is complete tap the back button return to the folder.
You will then see the new recording in the list of recordings, as well as the date and time of the recording.
To scroll to the top of the list tap the status bar.
To listen
Listen recordings either through:
- headphones
- iPhone's receiver by putting the phone up to your ear like during a phone call
- iPhone's speakers
- Bluetooth speakers (e.g. equipped car, cordless headphones)
Tap Airplay to select sound output.
iPhone models without Face ID support upside down orientation. Rotate iPhone with speaker up to play through speakers.
Select recordings to listen
- To listen to all recordings in a folder, tap the folder name from the main screen
- To listen to individual recordings, tap for that folder and then select the recording you want to listen to.
- You can also listen to all of your recordings or just new recordings by selecting those options on the main screen, as well as set the app to Shuffle or Repeat.
- While in a folder view tapping the folder name will play all recordings in that folder.
To rename a recording
Tap and hold on a recording until menu appears, tap Rename.
To delete a recording
Swipe left across the recording's name, then select Delete.
Advanced Features
Volume Level
Normalize the volume level of your audio: Go to Settings > Music, then turn on Sound Check.
This will allow to hear loud and quiet recordings on shuffle without need of adjusting volume for each recording. See Sound Check

Use Control Center to show audio controls to skip to next or previous recordings, pause or adjust volume:

Transfer recordings to and from your computer
The recorder app works with File Sharing. See iOS: About File Sharing
- Connect your iPhone to Computer
- Locate File Sharing for the iPhone on the computer
- In the File Sharing section choose Recorder app
- To transfer to the computer:
- Select recordings folders and drag them into a location on the computer.
- Wait for folders to be copied and open folders on the computer. There you will find recordings that can be played on the computer.
- To transfer to the app from the computer you can either drag individual audio files or folders with audio files.
- To copy individual recordings:
- Launch the Recorder app on the iPhone and open the folder where you want to copy the the files.
- Drag the audio files from the computer into File Sharing and see them appear in the Recorder app.
- Note: if the app is not launched during the file transfer the files will appear in "Everything else" folder
- To copy file folders with recordings:
- Drag folders files from the computer into File Sharing and wait for them appear in File Sharing.
- Open Recorder app on the iPhone and add a folder
- Notice newly added folder name will match the first folder that was transferred
- Keep adding folders until you have all folders that been transfered
Edit folders
Tap Edit in the top right corner of the main screen. While editing you can do the following.
- Delete folders. If a folder contains more then one recording you will be prompted to confirm the deletion. To undo delete shake your device until dialog appears, then tap Undo.
- Add a new folder. Tap a green plus sign to the left of the "Everything else" folder, keyboard will appear to edit new folder name.
- Edit a folder name. Tap on an existing folder name to bring up the keyboard.
- Rearrange folders. Tap the right side of a folder and drag it vertically to change the order.
File Menu
Tap and hold on a recording until menu appears
- Rename - to rename the recording
- Share - to copy or open recording with another app
- Move - select a folder where to move this recording.
- Delete - delete recording. To undo shake your device until dialog appears, select Undo.
Another method to access Share and Move is to swipe recording to the right.
Folder Menu
Either tap and hold on a folder or open a folder and tap and hold on folder name.
- Paste previosly copied recording
- Exclude from shuffle / include in shuffle. This way you can exclude some folders when shuffling all recordings.
- Move contents to another folder.
- Empty contents of the folder. To undo shake your device until dialog appears, select Undo.
To open a recording with another app
from File Menu select Share, then Open In.
Swipe left and right through the list of apps that can open sound files.
Tap selected app to see it imports the recording.
To copy and paste a recording
from File Menu select Share then Copy.
from Folder Menu, select Paste Audio.
You can also copy / paste audio from other apps
To import a recording from Voice Memos
Select a recording in Voice Memos app.
Tap share button.
Tap Save to Recorder button to copy voice memo to currently open folder in the Recorder.
